During the 2021 FORM exhibition at Sculpture by
the Lakes a rather curious incident took place. A visitor had purchased a
sandwich from the excellent café on site and wandered to the entrance display
on the right where there are a number of sculptures on show. Seeing no place to
sit in this area the visitor decided to remove a sculpture from a plinth, place
it on the ground and replaced the sculpture with their sandwich to make it
easier to eat… I found this story both hilarious and shocking and created I Am
Not A Sandwich in response to this most bizarre behaviour (it is a feta cheese
sandwich with a salad garnish!). Some of you will deduce (and you are right) its
creation gives a nod to Magritte and his famous “Ceci n’est pas une pipe”.
