Painting 'en plein air' means painting in the open air. It's a way of working that was pioneered by J.M.W. Turner and John Constable and was then made popular by the French Impressionists. Many artists choose to work in this way because when they paint outdoors, in front of the subject, they can capture the essence of their surroundings with freshness and energy. And where better to paint than at Sculpture by the Lakes?
This exhibition opens on Saturday August 20, when visitors will be able to watch artists Nick Andrew, Stephen Bithell, Michael Hemming and Jayne Tricker paint and draw en plein air in the park.
Works they have made on previous visits will be on display in the gallery. The exhibition runs until September 11 2022.
