Charcoal is wood which has been burned without any oxygen, normally done by setting the wood on fire and then cutting off the air, which keeps it from turning to ash. Stephen will debark, cut and prepare willow wood from Sculpture by the Lakes which will be charred over a Simon Gudgeon Fire Bowl. He will also be drawing willow trees around the lakes with pre-made charcoal during the processing of the new charcoal.
Stephen Bithell can be seen around the park here at Sculpture by the Lakes from season-to-season painting en plein air. Stephen has the fantastic ability to capture light and its changing, ephemeral qualities. In fact, a recent passion of his has been painting willow trees, the very wood which will be used in his charcoal demonstrations during Arbor.
