John Davey is renowned for his sculptures that investigate the journey of formation inspired by nature, man-made forms and the mastery of the ancients. He draws great inspiration from the Sea and landscapes of the Jurassic Coast. The forms and curves of pebbles, beaches, fossils. The geology and geometry of the quarries of Portland.
His sculptures reflect these natural and man-made environments through carving and construction, the very essence of sculpting itself, the emotional and tactile feeling of creation and transition into form. Working with wood and stone these are materials that Davey feels a deep connection with because of their source and symbolic meaning,
Davey was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland he studied his Art at Bournemouth, followed by Brighton attaining a BA (with Hons) degree. Davey worked as an assistant to Phillip King P.R.A and Pierre Vivant in the realisation of site-related installations at Tout Portland Sculpture Park. His skills later took him to France, to work for Sculptor and Architect, Armand Pellier who owned a stone quarry enabling Davey to refine his sculpting techniques. Davey's 40-year career as a Sculptor is celebrated with his work becoming widely collected, featuring in many private international collections.
He is now based in Dorset continues to draw from his inspirations and explore these within his practice, creating speculative pieces, themed collections as well as commissions for commercial and private clients.
